Final Project Progress

My final project as focused on the use of form and shadow to distort perception of space. I developed a system to create a planar model which provided me with a spatial parameter, then modified that structure with a wooden framework, eventually removing the planar model. From there, the planar model is replaced with a porous skin that produces diffuse light and distinct shadow patterns.

Midterm Analysis and Beginning of Final Project

The critique I received during midterm reviews presented some interesting and thought-provoking questions about my work. Throughout the first three design exercises, I focused primarily on process; the ideas and rules that guided my designs were paramount to me. The critics took note of this focus, and a major portion of feedback emphasized the need to consider the final product with the same scrutiny as the process. It was suggested that analytic drawing is the best way to examine my results for spatial potential and the relationship between exercises. While my presentation utilized some analytic drawings, a more thoughtful and rigorous application of drawing would be beneficial.

Midterm Setup
From my midterm I selected two models to continue exploring through my final project. I selected these two because I felt they most accurately portrayed my idea of "twisting + recurring" and because they would provide the most potential through hybridization.
Selected Models
From here, a thorough analysis of the benefits of each method of construction was made, and the core aspects of each were extracted. Then, these attributes were combined in various ways to examine how to best create new space.
Sample Study Model
This study model explores how a recurring piece can create a system that focuses light and twists one's perception. One might assume there is a focused back light behind this model; however, only ambient light is present, and the model simply amplifies and distorts the light within it. This is a phenomenon I will continue to explore throughout my final project.
